The Logo and Brand

HSBC's brand is one of the great success stories of modern marketing. Since 1998 we have operated under a single brand name combined with the graphic hexagon logo. Our iconic campaigns seen all over the world have drawn much favourable comment. The visibility of the brand and its unique marketing at airports has given us a very consistent personality and style.
The brand's strength has been recognised by many of the ratings agencies that monitor brand value. We are ranked the number one financial services brand by Brand Finance (Aug 2011) with a value of $27.1bn.
The new business strategy for The Group, unveiled in May 2011 by the CEO Stuart Gulliver is now reflected in the latest work in our advertising campaign. The emphasis is to build our brand further by reflecting on the future forces that will shape our world and commerce, many of which are clearly visible today. The new work features a unique graphic style and uses an intelligent wit to set up each idea with 'In the future....' as a common link to each story. The creative themes are drawn from the core business lines of our Commercial Banking, Global Banking and Markets and our Wealth Management businesses.
From March 1865, HSBC has developed a global network of around 7,500 offices in 87 countries and territories, enabling us to appreciate first-hand the richness of the world's diversity and the commercial opportunities such a network brings.

HSBC Malaysia
HSBC's presence in Malaysia dates back to 1884 when the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited established its first office in the country, on the island of Penang, with privileges to issue currency notes.
By 1959, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited had embarked on a programme of acquisitions. Through the acquisition of The Mercantile Bank, which started operations in Malaysia in 1860, HSBC is indirectly the oldest bank in Malaysia.
It opened offices in Ipoh in 1909 followed by branches in Malacca, Johor Bahru, and Kuala Lumpur in 1910. The Kota Bharu branch was opened in 1912.
In the 1920s to 1930s, the Bank opened more branches in several states. The Sungai Petani branch was opened in 1922, the Kuantan branch in 1929, the Muar branch in 1930, and the Kuala Terengganu branch in 1936.
In Sabah, the first branch opened in Kota Kinabalu in 1947. Branches were set up in Sandakan and Tawau a year later, followed by Labuan in 1957.
Meanwhile, in Sarawak, a branch was opened in Kuching in 1958. Another was established in Sibu in 1959, followed by a second branch in Kuching in 1964.
In 2006, HSBC was the first foreign bank to be awarded license to operate a Takaful (Islamic insurance) business in Malaysia. HSBC Amanah Takaful (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between HSBC Insurance (Asia Pacific) Holdings Limited (49% shareholding), Jerneh Asia Berhad (31% shareholding) and Employees Provident Fund Board of Malaysia (20% shareholding); commenced operations in August 2006.
In 2007, HSBC Bank Malaysia was the first locally incorporated foreign bank to be awarded the Islamic banking subsidiary license in Malaysia. HSBC Amanah Malaysia Berhad, a fully fledged Islamic bank wholly owned by HSBC Bank Malaysia, commenced operations in August 2008. Currently HSBC in Malaysia has a network of 48 branches nationwide – 40 conventional branches and 8 Islamic branches.

Our Local Incorporation

Hongkong Bank Malaysia Berhad was incorporated on 1 October 1984. The Malaysian branch operations of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited were localised and transferred to Hongkong Bank Malaysia Berhad on 1 January 1994, making it the first foreign owned financial institution to be localised.
